RARE STORY ~ Discarded Cambridge Glass Black Amethyst w/ Cobalt Lid (not a match, but that's how they were discovered in the landfill) Whiskey Decanter 1969 for J.W. Dant Americana ~
Measures approx. 4 1/2" x 7 3/4"
This decanter is one of 8 being sold separately from the same estate. The family lived in Cambridge, Ohio in the middle of last century, and a family member was a Director for Cambridge Glass Co. In a box from the family's estate were stored 8 decanters (6 blue/green slag, 1 caramel slag, and 1 black amethyst with an unmatched cobalt lid -- all being sold on eBay separately), along with a note (see picture of note) that reads as follows:
"Cambridge Glass Co. closed in 1958. In 1969 a company came in to make a large order of decanters for J.W. Dant, using Cambridge Glass as the formula for various colors. For some reason, J.W. Dant didn't accept the order and thousands of bottles were thrown in a land fill. Those which have been salvaged are being sold at auctions."
So, this decanter never went to market but was produced in the old Cambridge Glass Co. factory. The lid never had the cork applied, but there is a note on how to add that as well (see picture of note). I will include photocopies of the original notes along with the decanter.
The base of the decanter reads:
